From “Lost Boy” to Clinic Founder

Like Kon Abraham and Jok Dau, my childhood memories are full of stories attached to the cow or life in cattle camp. Cow means everything in Dinka's livelihood. Dinka people believe fresh dairy products to be one of the reasons they are tall, strong, and healthy. As a little child in the village, I never wanted to go to bed at night without a full tummy with milk. I enjoyed drinking milk even more if I had nothing else to eat. My life changed abruptly when I was separated from my family at six years of age, because of a…

From Ohio farmgirl to Buckeye Clinic Board Member

LIVES ARE BEING SAVED! My name is Linda Miller. I became involved with the Buckeye Clinic in South Sudan when it was forming in 2009. For the past four years I have been a member of the BCSS Board of Directors. I have been hearing Kon Abraham, Program Manager for the Buckeye Clinic in South Sudan, say “Lives are being saved at the BCSS Clinic.” However, during a recent Zoom meeting, Kon Abraham and Bol Aweng, both Lost Boys of what became South Sudan, shared stories about health care before and during their 1500-mile journey across Sudan. Giving Tuesday 2023 is Tomorrow!

This Giving Tuesday, the Buckeye Clinic in South Sudan continues to serve an ever-growing number of patients. To encourage donations, current and former members of the Board have pooled their individual contributions to match up to $16,000.00 of donations made before the end of the year. The satellite clinic in Mongalla began treating patients two years ago. Today over 1,400 clinic visits occur every month, almost double the number in the first 6 months. 30% of visits are children younger than 5. Children in South Sudan have a 1 in 5 chance of not living to age 5! Patients waiting…

Who do we serve? 40,000 people now live in the IDP camp. 50,000 people are in the neighboring host communities. 1,300 South…

Nutrition Services arrive at the Buckeye Clinic in South Sudan

INTRODUCTION In September 2021 BCSS established a satellite clinic at Mongalla Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp. Since then, 184 malnourished children and 6 mothers were diagnosed with malnutrition and data suggested this was increasing.   This prompted the project management to lobby for nutrition supplies. MSF (Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders) Swiss*, accepted our BCSS request and provided F100 milk in July 2023. BCSS staff began providing F100 milk to malnourished children at the IDP camp and nearby communities. This includes recent refugees in the camp displaced by the war in Sudan. BEFORE NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS Since opening in September 2021, at…
