New Ward Building is a Major Milestone for the Buckeye Satellite Clinic

The tents that we originally purchased for our clinic in the camp have been replaced by a wonderful new ward building thanks to your support and a generous grant from the United Methodist Church. At the opening of the new ward building on July 11, 2023, South Sudanese leaders expressed thanks to the Buckeye Clinic and its supporters for the new structure: Luois Garang Apiu, the camp chairman, stated, “Imagine: 41,000 inhabitants of this camp are only relying on this clinic alone." Rare Guinea Worm Disease Identified at the Buckeye Clinic

Medical News from the Buckeye Clinic in South Sudan Guinea worm disease (GWD) eradication is a global effort and is close to completion. While 3.5 million cases were documented globally in 1986, only 13 cases (including one in South Sudan) were reported in 2022. In the first quarter of 2023, no cases were reported anywhere in the world. However, this week at the Buckeye Satellite Clinic in Mongalla (BSCM), a woman presented with symptoms of GWD. Happy Mother’s Day

Even more mothers are coming to our clinic every month as the word gets out about the high quality, no-cost care provided by the Buckeye Clinic.  Our team in South Sudan works incredibly hard to provide this high quality care. They are available night and day. The clinic is well-lit, thanks to solar panels purchased with donations from many of you. Because our midwife often works at night, we have built some staff housing for overnight stays. We have water!

Many of you know that the original Buckeye Clinic in South Sudan, located in Piol, the home of our founders Bol and Jok, was closed in 2020 because of catastrophic flooding. To meet the urgent needs of the Piol villagers displaced by this disaster, we opened the Buckeye Satellite Clinic in the Mangalla camp for internally displaced people, in September 2021. The site the local leaders gave us for our tented clinic had — ironically — no water.
